A fatal two-vehicle collision Saturday left three people dead and three people injured in an accident that took place near Lower Lake, when a man reportedly lost control of the vehicle he was driving, causing it to drift across oncoming traffic before colliding with another vehicle on the roadway.
A 50-year-old man driving a 2001 BMW 740 heading northbound on Highway 29 was traveling at unknown speeds when he reportedly lost control of the vehicle, the California Highway Patrol said. The incident resulted in the vehicle drifting across the roadway and into oncoming southbound traffic. A 53-year-old man driving a 2008 Ford Taurus X SUV heading southbound on the roadway at the time ended up colliding with the right side of the BMW. The Taurus was reportedly traveling at unknown speeds when the collision took place.
The impact pushed the BMW towards a dirt embankment where it came to rest, while the Taurus remained in the middle of southbound lanes, the CHP said.
Three people died at the scene of the accident, the CHP said. Three others were transported to area hospitals via air ambulances for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash.
The CHP is still investigating the cause of the accident. All occupants of both vehicles were reportedly wearing their seat belts when the accident occurred.
